Apple butter originated in Europe during the Middle Ages. While the word “butter” appears in its name, it contains no butter similar to how peanut butter has no actual dairy butter in it. It’s really just concentrated applesauce that is typically made with cooked apples, sugar, and spices. The apples are cooked until caramelization occurs.
