Campbell’s Tomato Soup & Natural MSG

While MSG is not added to Campbell’s Tomato Soup, it contains natural MSG from at least one ingredient, tomatoes. According to the FDA, tomatoes naturally contain it along with many other foods like mushrooms, green peas, soy sauce, grape juice, fish sauce, and more (source).

MSG is “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA whether it comes from a natural or man-made source. A small percentage of people are reportedly sensitive to it and purportedly have symptoms like numbness, bloating nausea, stomach pains, headaches, and other mild issues. However, research has yet to link MSG to the reported sensitivities.

If you suspect MSG is causing you health issues, remove foods that contain it from your diet. An elimination diet is often recommended where the suspected foods that are causing problems are eliminated from the diet. These foods are eventually slowly added back into the diet with care being taken to make note of any problems.

Seek care or guidance from a qualified health professional when needed. Additionally, also reference the product label for the most accurate and current nutrition facts and ingredients.
