Is Rice Krispies Treats Cereal Still Made?
Unfortunately, Rice Krispies Treats cereal is no longer being made by Kellogg’s. This was confirmed by the company in July 2020 on Twitter when a fan of the cereal asked if it was still made by Kellogg’s. You can view Kellogg’s response below where they state it has been discontinued:

The Downfall: Change of Recipe?
Somewhere in 2019, Kellogg’s released Rice Krispies Treats cereal with a new recipe. The recipe changed from crispy clusters of Rice Krispies Treats to essentially mini marshmallows tossed into the original sweetened cereal.
Many fans of the classic cereal were not happy with the recipe change. For example, this change.org petition received almost 15,000 signatures from consumers requesting that Kellogg’s change the recipe back. Kellogg’s didn’t listen and instead discontinued the cereal altogether in 2020.
Who knows what really killed this cereal? If we had to guess, sales were probably not up to par under the old recipe. Kellogg’s may have tried a new recipe to increase sales and after a few months of sales not taking off, they decided to discontinue it.

Based on the Rice Krispies website, the following flavors of the cereal were available at the time of this article:
- Original Rice Krispies
- Cocoa Krispies
- Frosted Krispies
- Cookies & Creme Krispies

Rice Krispies Treats Cereal Release Date
While Rice Krispies Treats cereal may seem like a newer invention, it actually first was stocked on store shelves in 1993. Here is a commercial from around when the cereal was first launched in the early 1990s:
Where to Buy Rice Krispies Treats Cereal?
The cereal has been discontinued so it is highly unlikely that your local grocery store has it in stock. However, check the expiration date if you happen to find it. The cereal was discontinued at least by July 2020 so any product you buy will have the potential to be past its expiration or sell-by date.
We saw the cereal on eBay for $125. It was an unopened family-size box that expired roughly two years ago. We don’t endorse buying it but the cereal is available (albeit past its prime) for those willing to pay.
Will Rice Krispies Treats Cereal Return?
We have no information to suggest that Rice Krispies Treats cereal will ever return. While there certainly is demand for the cereal, we suspect that the demand is not strong enough to warrant a return. If we hear from Kellogg’s that the cereal will return, we will certainly let you know.
