Q: Where are bread crumbs in the grocery store?
Despite bread crumbs having the word “bread” in their name, you likely won’t have much luck finding them in the bread aisle of your local grocery store. Bread Crumbs can most often be found in the baking aisle of the grocery store. This aisle includes other products such as flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking soda, cake mixes, frosting, and chocolate chips.
Japanese-style bread crumbs, known as Panko, can sometimes be found in the international foods or Asian foods section of the grocery store if not in the baking aisle.

Homemade Bread Crumbs
You can make bread crumbs from your sandwich bread if you don’t feel like picking them up at the grocery store. Generally, it is cheaper to make your own. Follow these instructions to make homemade bread crumbs:
- Preheat the oven to 275°F
- Cut three or four bread slices into cubes
- Place the bread cubes on a baking sheet in a single layer
- Place the baking sheet in the oven for 20 minutes
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and flip the cubes
- Bake an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until the cubes are dry
- Remove the cubes from the oven and place them in a food processor with a metal blade
- Run the food processor (about 45 seconds) until the bread cubes take on the texture of bread crumbs
Once you have your bread crumbs made, you can add in spices like garlic powder, dried oregano, parsley flakes, and basil.
